Droid Razr Maxx

The concept of ads on your smartphone ( like Droid Razr Maxx, Droid 4 ) isn’t anything new, but the way they are targeting users is definitely evolving.  Instead of just seeing ads on TV, they are also being added to apps and anywhere else marketing companies can find.  When it comes to relevancy, privacy has always been a concern and things are only going to get worse.  Seeing ads that not only target you, but show which of your friends have also seen it brings new issues into the picture.  Google’s new social network is also being made a requirement with certain devices and any photos you take are automatically posted to the feed as well.

In the future, places such as your local grocery story or gas station may take data from your smartphone and display ads which are relevant to you.  Browsing history is often being gathered by companies and whenever you pass through places activated with this new technology, you may be bombarded with ads trying to get you to sample a new product in the store or send you coupons to convince you buy.

Marketing companies also pay big money to know where people go, things they enjoy, and how they interact with the world around them, so it only comes natural that companies which gather this information would want to sell them.. Relevancy wouldn’t be such an issue if controls were put in place on how data is collected and whether or not the user has control over what they want being seen. It’s only a matter of time before your smartphone knows what you want instead of the other way around, and that can definitely be an issue if you can’t tell them otherwise.  Could you imagine looking up pregnancy tests and having someone close to you seeing the ad on your phone?  That concept could be the next trend in the information superhighway we call the internet.
