We’ve all seen it, the multitasking driver, eating, putting on makeup, watching the kids, and last but not least talking on the phone. It is a regular sight on almost any street in any city, but in a short time at least one of those things won’t be so common or at the very least it won’t be legal. Within the last few years the “Hands Free” laws began picking up speed with them passing in New York, Connecticut, Washington DC, New Jersey, California and Washington state. Now another round of states are passing the laws one of which is Texas.

Texas’s new laws will go into effect on September 1, 2009. They will ban teens from using cell phones as well as stopping drivers from using their phones while in  school crossing zones. There are already some laws in effect such as learners permit holders can’t use cell phones in the first six months of driving, school bus drivers can’t use their phones while they have passengers, and in Dallas the use of cell phones without a hands-free device is banned.

Many other states will be adopting some type of “Hands Free” law the list is as follows:

Illinois: Effective January 1, 2010 Anyone under 19 is prohibited from using a cell phone while driving, School bus drivers cannot use phones while there are passengers on the bus, in Chicago everyone has to use a habds free device and text messaging is banned for everyone, as well as the use of phones in a school zone.

Kansas: January 1, 2010 All permit licence holders are band from the use of cell phones while driver.

Maryland: October 1, 2009  All permit licence holders are banned from the use of cell phones. text messaging is not lawful for anyone driving.

New Hampshire: January 1, 2010 Text messaging and the use of any electric device that requires the use of two hands is banned for everyone.

North Carolina: December 1, 2009 Under age drivers with provisional licences are banned from using cell phones while driving unless their calling their parents. School bus drivers can’t use cell phones while driving, and text messaging is banned for all drivers.
