DirectFix gives you the tools to fix your broken iPhone

Well, an interesting site has popped up called simply DirectFix. What do they do? They sell parts for Apple products, mainly the iPhone, so you can fix your own phone. The main components they sell are the components for the screen (LCD, Digitizer, etc) for those of us who aren’t quite so nimble on our feet. But they don’t just sell you the parts you need, they also provide instructions on not only what part you need, but also how to install the part as well as selling the actual tools; making this a great resource not only for people who want to fix their phone themselves but also for the hacking community.

“Returning a broken iPhone to the manufacturer is no longer an option… most times it’s easier — and faster — to fix it yourself,” says Robby Stanley, founder of DirectFix.com. “DirectFix.com mails you a new screen, you go online and follow the step-by-step video, and you’re back up and running in a day or less.”

There are some obvious problems with this. The main being, if your phone is under warranty, you will completely void it by popping the phone open and changing out parts, trust me, they will know, so don’t even try to be sneaky. Two, you could easily break something else, causing a chain of events where you probably would have been better off sending it in to begin with. Heck, I wouldn’t be surprised if they refused to work on the phone at all after you opened it up (has happened to me with other electronics several times). Last, you could very easily buy the wrong part or need to purchase additional parts; the cost could be significantly higher than your originally thought, the repairs could be much more difficult and you may spend more time waiting for shipping.

So you should make a very conscious and informed decision before you start trying to repair your own electronics. On the other hand, if you’re a huge nerd like me, you may find it enjoyable even if it doesn’t work out in the end, but to each his own.
