Treo 800w proves that Palm is still not down for the count yet
July 29th, 2008 | by Pallavi Dinesh |With the quiet release of the new Treo 800w a few days after the much-anticipated iPhone 3G launch, one has to wonder what is exactly the strategy at Palm. Is the Treo 800w simply a new device on the market for this year for the company? I am really getting tired of this bit of each company feeling obligated to release new devices for the sake of releasing new devices to keep its shareholders happy. Or is this really a great device for your virtual office on the go? I am in no way comparing the new Palm device to iPhone 3G … they are on 2 totally different levels and have different purposes and target audiences.
I think the most anticipated thing about the 800w, for better or worse, is its new version of Windows Mobile. I remember once long ago thinking how great it would be one day when Microsoft would be able to sort out its WM bugs and make all of our mobile lives easier. Little did I think at that time that Apple would be here with its iPhone or Google with its phone launch just around the corner. Competition is a constant factor no matter who you are. No one is a kingpin in the smartphone market - not even Apple or RIM and who knows what is around the corner for tomorrow.
One thing I would like to mention…I know the Treo 800w has been receiving a lot of slack for poor battery life. To be fair to Palm, most of the general public wants to do 101 things with their smartphones and expect the darn battery life to last for a zillion hours. So, people out there, if this is your biggest complaint about the phone then I think Palm is doing just fine…Get a spare battery for your Treo800w and just keep chugging along.
