Nokia to ramp up efforts in US

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Some of you might remember the piece I wrote on Nokia a few months ago. Well fast forward to the end of 2008 (can you believe the year has gone so fast?) and the fact that Nokia just announced it’s going to ramp up R&D for US market. Well, it’s about time people. What were you waiting for before?

Nokia 5800 Comes With Music

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

As if  the the name doesn’t say it all, the Nokia 5800, previously code-named Tube, comes with music. That is, the phone comes with an available service named Comes With Music. This service gives you unlimited downloading access to millions of songs for free for the first year. After that year all the music downloaded is yours to keep. Top record labels like Universal and Sony BMG  are a part of this program, so you know the music is good.

Nokia new concept phone

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

The Nokia 888 concept phone is just too cool for words. I know it’s a concept phone and it will take some time to reach market (if it ever does!) but I can dream can’t I?

Nokia specs for this phone boast of some amazing features including the fact that the phone uses a liquid battery and a flexible touch screen to take this beyond just a phone. The concept is really that it is more than a phone. It is your lifeline.

It is Oct 2nd and we already have Nokia ‘Tube’

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Nokia today announced it’s Touch screen Device Nokia Tube. It will be intresting to see how the Symbian OS works on a touch screen basis, As I have said earlier too, Symbian and other OS like RIM and Windows Mobile were all made with the concept of keyboard and a major joy stick control emphasis. So Nokia beat RIM on the launch of touch screen device. So shall we say let the smartphone X-mas begin.

Increased demand for smartphones in recessionary markets seems likely

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Is there some strange connection between recessionary economies and an increase in demand for smartphones? Well, one could argue that there is indeed such a connection when taking the case of Japan. Japan has been in a recession for years, yet the demand for smart mobile devices has continued to increase, as Japanese have lusted for the next ’smart’ device.

Nokia Tube to be launched October 2

Friday, September 26th, 2008

The new Nokia device ’Tube’ is set for release on October 2nd. This (much like many other devices) is being labeled as the iPhone-killer. Don’t you just wonder what all those execs at Apple think about every new device that hits the market that gets labeled as an iPhone-killer?

Mobile banking gets going slowly for US market starting with nokia & android

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Visa is starting to go through testing for mobile banking (payments and money transfers) for US customers. Although other Eastern Asian countries, including Japan are already there, we have been waiting to get this going for a while.

The Nokia 6212 which is expected to ship out to consumers next month is specifically getting testing done for “contactless payment.” The phone is embedded with a near-field communications chip, which Visa’s software will use to communicate with its bank partners.

World War 3

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Well, ok maybe not World War 3 but definitely the ’smartphone wars’ have been on since this summer began with no end in sight. What brought on this war? Well, -you could say that the iPhone coming on the scene in June 2007 was like when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor back in 1941. A total surprise attack!

No doubt Apple dropped a big bomb on RIM, Palm, Danger (they make the T-mobile Sidekicks) and a host of other smartphone handset markers who had become a little too comfortable in their arena.

And although the new Apple iPhone 3G continues to have ‘bugs’ as per Steve Jobs himself, the device is still selling like hotcakes.
