Garmin’s dreams and hard work are finally being realized today as their first GPS unit/wireless device hybrid nuvifone is finally going on sale in U.S. via carrier AT&T. If you recall this phone was announced back in January of 2008. A lot of stuff has happened since then and many believed this phone would not even make it into the hands of consumers.

The phone was announced earlier this week and AT&T will have it exclusively starting today, Oct. 4, at AT&T stores and online. The device is on sale for $299 with a two-year agreement and $100 mail-in rebate. I personally think this is a tough market to release a smartphone for anything more than $199, so it better an amazing phone.

The nuvifone is a touch-screen smartphone with many expected features including a 3 megapixel camera and web browser. And of course, the whole reason for the phone is the remarkable features of Garmin’s Global Positioning System, which powers this device like no other and can provide turn-by-turn driving directions and a search engine for local retail/restaurant/business searchability. Users also have the option to get a $6 monthly subscription for updated traffic warnings, weather information, movie times, and area fuel prices.

Of note, Garmin has also said it is working on developing a device that will use the Android mobile operating system software and will be released in 2010.  Android has recently seen an uptake in popularity thanks to the recently launched myTouch 3G and the soon to be launched Motorola Cliq.
