Why does Apple’s iPhone always have the best apps?
July 14th, 2009 | by Jhananthi Janakiraman |iPhone sales have become somewhat of a milestone, not to mention the recent 1st year anniversary of the Apple App Store reaching a status all on its own, while surpassing 1.5 million downloads. Of course, there’s no doubt iPhone sales are primarily being driven by its amazing variety of applications available for download.
Just why are there so many iPhone apps when compared to other platforms? Although Java is a powerful platform, it is difficult to develop apps for it, hence developers try to avoid developing apps for BlackBerry phones which runs Java. Also each phone needs to be dealt with differently. All this deters developers who in turn choose to focus on iPhone and iPod Touch user-base for instant success.
In iPhone and iPod Touch the specifications are the same and will not change with newer models arriving on the scene. Actually coding for different platforms is complicated with adjustments required for screen sizes, hardware, and software features of any phone.
When coding for BlackBerry phones, developers may have to design apps differently for different models and the remuneration may not be all that attractive. Some apps may be available for only BlackBerry Storm, for example, and not others. It leaves one wondering if it is viable to write apps for the Android platform or the BlackBerrys moving ahead.
Mobile developers are generally inclined towards Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch knowing fully well that number of users will only grow and there is a lot of money to earn (and popularity to gain) from its app store downloads.
