Motorola planning to make cheap smartphones?
July 2nd, 2009 | by Jhananthi Janakiraman |While it’s been very clear that Motorola feels the answer to their dryspell is Android powered smartphones, it seems that they might be looking to attract buyers interested in low price handsets.
The reality for Motorola is that there’s already too much competition in the $199 price range with popular devices such as Apple iPhone 3G S, Palm Pre, BlackBerry Tour, and myTouch 3G all going toe to toe with each other. Instead, coming out in a big way with mobile phones based on the Google Android platform, in a lower price range just might do the trick. It seems the company may be trying to attract the mid- and low-range phone markets with their upcoming Android powered devices according to rumored sources.
This move by Motorola is lauded by analysts who feel that the company will be able to gain lost ground by avoiding the high-end smartphone sector. Motorola may even generate high revenue with sales of up to 70 million units by next year. T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless will both launch Motorola-made Android phones by this year end but there are no firm release dates.
