Picking the right touch screen phone for Mom this Mother’s Day

April 23rd, 2009 | by Chris Speight |

Well, Mother’s Day is just a few short weeks away, and if your mother has been trying to catch up with the latest technology curve, a new phone can be a great way to do it. But which one should you buy for her? So today, I’m going to try to offer you a little advice on picking out a touch screen device for good ol’ Ma. To help you narrow it down, I’m going to be comparing three of the most popular and mainstream devices that your mother may already have heard of: the iPhone 3G, the T-Mobile G1, and the BlackBerry Storm.

iPhone 3G – Well, if you’re looking for a stylish phone, this is the one to look for, combining great colors and a very sleek look. This phone is great if your mum wants great multimedia and an iPod like device tagged along with the best applications around and a very rich web browsing experience. If your mom wants to do a bunch of e-mail and text messaging, she may want to look elsewhere due the cramped keyboard. So if you want a fun, hip device, this is a great choice. Unfortunately, this great platform is only available on AT&T, and coverage can be very spotty.

BlackBerry Storm – Want something a bit more serious for mother but still has some of the touchscreen fun? The Storm is a good pick. It combines an interesting touchscreen keyboard with the typical BlackBerry features including unparallelled e-mail and business capabilities. Unfortunately, the browser is still a bit weak and you may want to have mom try the keyboard first, as it is typically a love/hate relationship that most people can’t get over. It’s only available on Verizon, widely regarded as the best wireless carrier.

T-Mobile G1 - Don’t really know what to get? Than this is a great choice. This phone may not have the rich multimedia experience of the iPhone or the business touches of the Storm, but it is a jack of all trades. It currently isn’t a full touchscreen device, since you can’t type on the screen (yet), but the slide out keyboard may prove to be more appealing to some moms than the touch screen varieties. While it may not have the power and apps of the iPhone or the serious features of BlackBerry, it offers a great all around package that can do almost almost anything well. The phone is obviously only available on the T-Mobile carrier, which is pretty decent as far as quality/coverage goes.

Need some more help? Well, talk to your mom. This phone is likely going to be quite an investment or gift, so make sure you get here something she wants. Even better, take her to the store and have her try them out. Also, you would do well by mom to make sure she is going to have coverage in the spots she frequents, so look up coverage maps for her area to make sure she stays happy and can get a hold of you when she needs to.
