Does RIM Feel Threatened By Palm Pre Launch?

June 2nd, 2009 | by Prachi Mehta |

In the next few months four new smartphones are expected to rock the market. The Palm Pre, Blackberry Storm 2, Samsung Android, and the next gen iPhone 3.0 are going to be launched this summer. There are a lot of rumors making a buzz about the competition between the four smartphones. Now the question is which one of them is going to sway the market off its feet?

Rumors suggest that the new Palm Pre is a killer competition for the current BlackBerry Storm and iPhone. The Blackberry Storm has not been able to fit a physical keyboard with the touch-screen unlike other smartphones like Palm Pre. The Palm Pre is supposed to decrease the extensive use of the Stylus by introducing QWERTY in their models.

However, some sources suggest that the touch screen capabilities have been merged with the physical keyboard in Blackberry Storm 2. The Blackberry Storm 2 leaked photos have allegedly started surfacing on the internet. The only difference is that the last four buttons at the bottom on the BlackBerry Storm are made as a part of the touch screen.

Palm Pre has an accelerate feature which adapts well in landscape and portrayal mode. Blackberry Storm does allow its users to use this exclusive feature.

Blackberry Storm 2 is going to be introduced in the market with 3.2 mega pixel camera instead of the much talked about 5 mega pixel cameras which has been the biggest disappointment.

Now the real question is how much does RIM feel threatened by the Palm Pre. I’m sure come launch day, RIM management will be keeping a close watch on the press and preliminary sales figures. Since day 1 at CES the Palm Pre has been seriously hyped and has been coined as the most anticipated device of the year. Regardless of what happens, RIM shouldn’t worry at the end of the day because all this boils down to the fact that the smartphone market is expanding overall and taking market share from the regular, run of the mill cellphones.

Indeed the market trend is looking promising for the Palm Pre.
