Palm Pre – 4G, trick or treat?
April 13th, 2009 | by Chris Speight |
Well, a bit early for Halloween, but the new Sprint advertisements include both the upcoming 4G network and the Palm Pre, although it makes no attempts to convey their relation other than that. But it has served to make a few people think that the Pre will in fact contain 4G compatibility, which was probably intentional on Sprint’s part even if a bit dishonest. I just want to first make it clear: there is nothing to support that the Palm Pre will support 4G. This isn’t to say that there is no chance, but the current official Palm specifications has the network listed as “3G EVDO Rev A” and I have to think, that if it did support the upcoming 4G network, they would be extremely blatant with that fact since it could drive hype and sales significantly for the device. So my personal feeling is that we will have to wait for at least a second generation Pre before we see 4G compatibility.
With the heavy marketing campaign already started (both in print and television), the release date seems to be very fast approaching. As well, it seems Sprint employees themselves are beginning to undergo training for the device, and with the promised end of first half of the year drawing near, it shouldn’t be much longer until everyone can get their hands on one. Unfortunately, according to Engadget we won’t see the device before May 16th either.
